GRSSC 10th Anniversary Player Spotlight

Meet Brittany Wing

There is a strong sense of hope for all of those who suffer from social anxiety, and it sits within one of our very own GRSSC players, Brittany Wing.

Brittany, a resident in Grand Rapids, joined GRSSC 2 years ago as a free agent in order to cope with a wave of anxiety that struck her. “It started 3 years ago when I moved to East Lansing,” Brittany explained, “I had an event that flipped my world upside down, and I started isolating myself from everyone. Before I knew it, I had isolated myself for so long I did not have anyone to comfort me.”

Brittany continued to try and deal with her anxiety alone in Lansing, until everyday errands made her realize she could not combat this alone. “Everyday errands where I had to go out in public became nearly impossible for me,” she said, “I remember one day I went to get on the subway. All of the sudden, I had a major wave of anxiety come over me in the parking lot. I was having an anxiety attack over a place I had never been. I sat there crying in the car until I eventually turned around and went home.”

Brittany eventually moved home to Grand Rapids in order to rebuild her strength and social confidence (go Brittany!!) as well as to find comfort amongst her friends and family. As anyone with anxiety knows, after dealing with anxiety for a period of time, feeling helpless begins to sink in. ‘What if things were going to stay like this forever?’ ‘What if there was no going back to the old Brittany?’

As Brittany continued to seek help for her anxiety and depression, her therapist began pushing for her to break out of her shell again and place herself in social/interactive situations. “That’s when I decided to join Grand Rapids Sport and Social Club,” she said. “I was a free agent, and they put me where they decided to put me. I wouldn’t know anyone. I almost didn’t go. My roommate threatened me and said ‘you are going or I will come over there and drag you out of the apartment’. So I grabbed a bottle of wine, I chugged it, and I went.”

Now, 2 years later, Brittany runs errands, goes to her league nights and bars with ease. “Even though I didn’t know anyone my first season at GRSSC, it popped my social anxiety bubble,” she explained, “I never felt judged, and now some of my closest friends are from GRSSC and are on my team.”

For Brittany, it was not just about joining GRSSC that made her find her true self again, but it was finding a way to surround herself with people who push her up rather than pull her down. “I don’t really suffer anymore,” she said with a smile, “I am comfortable with who I am.”

Sharing Brittany’s story not only highlights her strength but how indomitable she was to beat the illness that once consumed her. Having people like Brittany in GRSSC as well as in the community positively impact us in more ways than we can count.

Thank you, Brittany, for being a symbol of hope to those who struggle with mental illnesses today.

We were so excited to golf and party with our players at the annual GRSSC golf tournament last Saturday. Unfortunately, the rain ruined the fun and we had to cancel the tournament due to standing water on the course. With this said, we decided to reschedule the tournament to Saturday, June 2nd for all of you who signed up! Hopefully mother nature complies this time.
