The Weekly Brew
Let’s see what’s brewing this week at GRSSC
Woohoo! That’s a wrap for week 1 of Summer 2
Alright, seriously…we had an absolute blast with you for the first week of Summer 2. We love all of the energy you are bringing to your leagues and at the bars. Lets keep it going. DON’T FORGET: every week, make sure you are checking your schedules on our NEW website.
“I flunked out of college. I wanted to go to be an elementary school teacher.” said Ben, our very own league ambassador and player at GRSSC. “Apparently in my class at MSU, there was an attendance policy I didn’t know about. Next thing I know, I’m back in Rockford.”
Ben Crawford grew up in Rockford with his mom and dad. When he broke the news to his parents that he would be coming home after 2 years, Ben could feel their disappointment. “They were definitely disappointed in me. But life kept going on. I went back to what I could do best: cooking and managing.”
As the years went on and Ben continued to manage at Big Boy in Grand Rapids, something big began to inspire him. “My mom always had a dream of going back to school,” Ben said, starting to perk up, “she just graduated with a degree in social work this year. She’s 63 years old.”
Ben’s mother went back to school to earn a degree in social work. “She always wanted a career she loved,” Ben explained, “and she was also concerned about something happening to my dad and not being able to provide for us. So she went back. Now she works for Bethany Hospital to help refugees.”
Ben then explained how it really put things in perspective for him. “I’m too smart to be doing what I’m doing,” Ben said. “My mother inspired me to go back to school and get that degree so I can do what I love, too.”
One of Ben’s plans is to continue to work on the side as he completes school. “I want to go for psychology or social work, like my mom,” he said, “I always found those classes to be the best. I just need the money to get there. I’ll continue to work at GRSSC and possibly start a new job through a friend in my league.”
No matter the career path Ben chooses, he now knows that earning that degree will be a step in the right direction for him. “So many insecurities will be gone when I complete this. I know I’m going to make my parents and myself proud.”
Good luck to you, Ben! You inspire us in so many ways.

Stop the Press! You’re going to want to read this if you missed it in last week’s newsletter!
You’ve probably heard about the Alaskan “Iditarod” race with dogs and sleds and whatnot;
Well, this is nothing at all like that.
Instead of dogs, it’s people. Instead of a sled, it’s a shopping cart. Instead of winter gear, it’s costumes. Yeah, it’s going to be awesome.
Where: Heartside Park, Downtown Grand Rapids.
When: Saturday, August 4th, 2018
Who: 600-1,000 racers (4-6 people/team)
We’ve got 5-6 charities that are benefiting. We are incorporating 5-6 local bars, and we’ve got the green flag from the City to do this!
Racers will navigate the pedestrian ways of downtown as they use clues to search for their next checkpoint (a pub). They have a mandatory 20-min wait at each checkpoint to ‘re-hydrate’ their ‘doggies’. There isn’t any order of what bars to hit and there isn’t any dedicated route. It’s all on them. It’s all urban.
Trust us when we say it is going to be huge.
